Meeting with the NFVF and Department of Labour

IDAA Chairperson Andile Sinqoto met today with a representative of the Department of Labour from the Minister’s office as a parliamentary officer; the acting CEO of the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), in addition to the NFVF Stakeholder Relations Manager. The discussion included new policies that address equality in the film and television industry regardless of race and gender, industry transformation and change; and better working conditions for our South African film and television crews.

The Department of Labour and NFVF expressed a deep concern for the appalling working conditions of our industry of which they regrettably had no prior awareness. However, moving forward after meeting close, the Dept. of Labour representative will consult with the Minister’s office regarding the mending of these issues; the NFVF will also escalate the matters presented in our meeting with their stakeholders. Our next meeting is due in the next few weeks where we will not only get feedback on what was discussed but how we can jointly progress towards resolving our industry’s issues, amending our policies and improving working conditions.

We at IDAA are highly grateful to the Minister’s office, Dept. of Labour and the NFVF for setting aside time to hear our concerns and address them. Moreover, we are also looking forward to being joined in our next meeting by the Department of Arts and Culture; and more representatives of the Minister’s office and Department of Labour to work together in the restructuring and transformation of our film and television industry.
